Buena Vista 2006

After a long frustrating week at work I was itching to hit the trails again. I started talking with my buddy Greg and decided to head out to Buena Vista Colorado. Couple hours from Denver and seemed like an easy commute. He mentioned he had a great stay at the Buena Vista KOA, so I gave them a call. I was a little leary about staying at an improved camping facility, but it was a great time! Very nice people. I would highly recommend staying there. Anyway, I called them on Thursday right before Memorial Day weekend and go their second to last tent spot. Everything else was booked. We got there late Friday night and setup camp. Saturday we headed for the hills! First stop was Baldwin Lake up by St. Elmos Ghost town. Heres a few pics along the way.

Above and below are a couple of nice shots heading up the mountain and following the creek. Kids loved the scenery and enjoyed the smooth drive.

Almost to the lake we found a trail heading across the creek and up the mountain--of course we followed!

Folowing up this way we quickly hit the tree line. What the pics dont show is the snow drifts just around the bend. We hit a couple and since I was traveling alone with my kids, we played it safe and headed back from there.

My son, as usual, needed to uh go. I let him know he could just run into the trees and go. I kept an eye on him and didnt even notice the deer standing next to him about 4-6 feet away. As soon as he uh zipped and ran my way, the deer took off the other way. I was amazed how close they were.
