Flat Tops Adventure Travel 2006
A small group of Colorado 4 wheelers decided to head out on the western slope for a 3 day, 2 night camping trip. The trail wast difficult, but the scenery was going to be nice. I was invited to tag along. So I packed up the Jeep and headed west. Over the Divide we went. As they stated, the trail seemed to be no real problem going in, but did take about two hours.
After some nice scenery, we had a steep decent followed by a mild water crossing. Once on the other side the trail went up with a couple tight switchbacks for a little bit, then back to open grassy fields.
As promised, the scenery was great. Once we finally got to the end of the trail, we setup camp. Our chosen camp site was between to mountain lakes. This was a very beautiful spot. As the sun set I snapped a couple of pics....
After dinner I went to bed feeling a little ill. Unfortunatly this was one of those trips that turned bad. I was sick all night. I lost my dinner and anything else that might have been in my stomach. I was up all night. The next day I basically just laid around and enjoyed the time off. I slept, then read a book. Then I decided to hike around one of the lakes. Once back, I took another nap! What a great relaxing day! I havent been able to relax like that in a long time. Enjoying the sunset once more, we hung out around the camp fire for a while telling lies and then off to bed. It then rained the entire night! When we woke up, everything had mud! I broke down camp and loaded the jeep. I was ready to go since the jeep was soaked inside and out. Once everyone was ready we headed back down.
The off camber areas of the trail that were not such a problem coming in, became slippery and a small problem getting out. This was especially the case for the two jeeps that had trailers behind them. With it being so wet, it was kinda cool seeing the clouds so low and kind of surround you.
I wasnt able to get too many other pics of us coming down. The mud was so thick, I was spending most of my time trying to keep myself on the trail. We did have a small incedant with one of the jeeps pulling a trailer. The trailer slipped off the trail and started down the mountain actually pulling the jeep off the trail as well. Luckily down the hill about 20 feet was another road. He just backed onto that trail and kept going. Would make for a erie feeling having your jeep pulled off the trail and down the mountain BACKWARDS! Yikes! Pucker factor of 10! The jeep that made the fun trip backwards is this one below. Though this was the only shot from when we came into camp!
The trip was a fun one and hope to visit these beautiful mountain lakes again someday!
