The Best Expedition Tire
"The Best Expedition Tire" is a strong term. There are alot of tires out there. Ive tried several of them and have put lots of miles on most. Some have done great, some I couldnt wait to get back from my trip to hurry up and get them off. Tires are important and can make or break a good expedition trip. I must say that Im proud to have Interco Tire Corp. as a sponsor of this site and our Adventure Travels. You can ask anyone who knows me, I spent a ton of time getting them on board. I didnt want any other tire. I used their TrXus MT tires on the Pinzgauer and wanted a set of their SSR Super Swampers for our Suburban. In my opinion, they make the perfect size expedition tire. I called them up and got a set of 35X10.50X16! The PERFECT size. You can fit them on a 16 inch rim from 7 inches wide to 9 inches. They are a Radial tire with and 8 ply rating and a 2 ply sidewall. I was a little nervous about the 2 ply sidewall I must admit. I have never punctured a sidewall, and since the sidewalls arent that stiff, they make for a great ride on miles of washboard when aired down. These tires weigh in at 67 pounds, so are lighter than some of its competitors. Speaking of competitors, there are VERY FEW! I dont know why you cant get your hands on a 35 inch tire that isnt wide??? The tread pattern is tried and true. They have enough lug to get you out of some seriously sticky situations, but with a radial design for a fairly quiet ride home. And no, I didnt find them loud. I actually felt they were quieter than the BFG MT. They also have a sipping built in for wet or icy conditions, which helps greatly in making this a great all around expedition tire. There are a few people out there that say the Michelin XZL is the best, but it is terrible in wet conditions. Its also super loud, and rides hard as a tank. Add the fact that these are getting EXTREMELY hard to get here in the US, and its obvious that the Super Swammper SSR is the new great expedition tire.
